NATIONAL NOISE ACTION WEEK: UKNA IN SEARCH OF LONDON’S NOISIEST UNDERGROUND STATION 20 May 2007 As the start of the annual National Noise Action Week (1) gets underway, the UK Noise Association (UKNA) is mounting an investigation into London’s noisy underground system. Travellers are being encouraged to nominate their noisiest station via an on-line poll on the UKNA website. (2) A report on the findings will be published later this year. (a) John Stewart, Chair of the UKNA says: “The investigation follows countless complaints from travellers across London about the excessive use of announcements and the high volume that messages are often conveyed.” The UK Noise Association will be taking noise measurements at individual underground stations, but tube lines will also be investigated, with the Piccadilly Line already singled out for criticism. Complaints have even reached the ears of London Assembly member Angie Bray, who will raising questions at the Mayor’s Question Time on May 23rd. One of the questions drafted asks: “Can drivers on the Piccadilly Line alter the volume of pre-recorded announcements on trains?” (3) Many passengers complain that the messages given out on platforms and throughout train carriages are unnecessary, loud and annoying. Val Weedon, National Coordinator for the UK Noise Association adds: “The constant amplified messages telling people to stand behind the yellow line on the platform, that smoking isn’t allowed, or they need to tap in and tap out with their Oyster Card, not to leave their luggage unattended, or there is a train approaching, is so annoying it makes travelling very unpleasant. Passengers only really want to know of any immediate travel problems and maybe when they’ve reached their destination.” Anyone brave enough to leave their contact details will be sent a set of FREE set of ear-plugs they can carry with them on their next journey!
