Text Box: Poor Sound Insulation in the Home: New Survey launched

It is not entirely known just how many people and properties are affected by poor sound insulation in the home, but previous estimates have put the figure at around 2.5 million. We do know the problem is significant and can cause extreme psychological distress to those affected.

The UK Noise Association has been leading the way in the fight against poor sound insulation for many years. It has produced three separate reports since 2002 (A Sound Solution March 2002, Socially Unsound Sept 2003 and Antisocial Housing July 2004).

In January 2012 the UKNA held a parliamentary reception “Why Noise Matters” to highlight the plight of one sufferer and his 8 year fight for justice.
The booklet “Nelson’s Story” was launched at the event, which was attended by the noise Minister Lord Taylor, as well as Nelson himself.

Despite improvements to Building Regulations for new build homes, and noise being included as a psychological hazard in the Housing Act 2004, the problem is still a burden of complaint to Local Authorities and Housing Associations.

The UKNA now feels it is time to revisit the issue to see where we are, if there is anything we’ve missed and draw up a Programme of Action for Change that will be presented to parliament in 2013.

To enable UKNA to produce this we are launching a national survey to help collate vital information from those who suffer and to find out how poor sound insulation affects their lives, how the authorities are responding and what we can realistically do to improve things in the future.

If you have suffered noisy neighbours caused by poor sound insulation then please take part in our simple survey.
